Based on 2013 data, individuals moved to the following locations:

  • Nevada, Florida and Colorado are seeing an influx of new movers and new homeowners. In fact, 4.6 percent of the total population ventured to Nevada, 4.4 percent settled in Florida and 4 percent chose Colorado as their new homes.
  • Arizona, Rode Island, Washington, D.C., Oregon, Iowa, Nebraska and Washington also experienced high new-mover rates.
  • The Villages, Florida, was the top new-mover market last year. Compared to the total population, 7.5 percent of individuals called this city their new home. Nearly 6 percent said the same about Harrison, Arkansas, while 5.7 percent moved to Cap Coral-Fort Myers, Florida.
  • Five of the top markets were in Florida. Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin and North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, as well as Jefferson, Georgia, also saw high new-mover rates.

Marketers should target new homeowners within the first 180 days of their move because this demographic typically spends $9,700 on new items within that time frame. Additionally, homeowners spend more within the first three months than the average consumer spends in five years. New movers are also an important  demographic for marketers focused on customer acquisition and retention because these individuals are five times more likely to become long-term consumers when an industry marketing professional reaches them before competitors.
